Vineyards and wine making mark a further expansion of James Tufenkian’s decades long Armenian odyssey, dedicated to helping resurrect the greatness of the Armenian past, and re-imagining for the newly re-born nation in the 21 st century, much of what was taken from it in the preceding one. First in the nearly lost Armenian art of carpet making. Then in architecture, cuisine, design and hospitality. Now in wines, Tufenkian again joins with others lovingly investing their lives and resources in this historic project of national vival.
DRAWING ON DECADES OF FRENCH WINE-MAKING EXPERTISE
Knowing nothing more than he had learned from years of enthusiastic wine consumption, James knew he needed good advice to draw on in shaping his vision for the Tufenkian Heritage wine brand, and to guide development of the vineyards and wines. At about the same time Yves Dietrich, scion of the Alsace based Achille Wines, became fascinated by the potential of the re-emerging Armenian wine industry.
Recognizing the rare volcanic soils, the wonderful indigenous grapes, and the extraordinary altitudes at which wine is produced there, he was anxious to be part of the new adventure. After a brief introduction and sharing of values, James and Yves committed to partner in the new wine-making venture, based on a shared commitment to practices in the vineyards and the winery that would lead to crafting of wines distinctively Armenian, widely respected, and faithfully following in the traditions of Armenia’s more than 6000 years of wine making.
